Our staff as designed some great STEM units that we teach over the course of the year. They teach the kids to observe, make predictions, solve problems, and create! Below are the units that we cover.
Raising TroutWe usually get our trout in Mid January-February and we keep them until they reach the Parr stage. I release them Hagg Lake near Forest Grove. Stages and pictures are shown below.
Oregon AnimalsHave you ever seen a black bear, turkey vulture, cougar, or white tailed deer in person? Well we will get to when we venture to the zoo at the end of this unit! The kids get to see the animals they learn about over the course of the unit. Not only do we learn about their offspring, diet, and habitat but we also get to learn about their tracks, fur, and height.
Weather ObservationsThroughout the year we learn about the weather! In calendar we talk about the weather outside and when it's extreme weather ask, how is this happening? Students get the chance to stand up and be the meteorologist for the day.

Forces & InteractionsWe learned about force, friction, push, pull using a variety of methods. At the end students worked in pairs to design a marble track from recycled materials. It was amazing to see the ideas come to life and when they didn't work at first they worked together to come up with another idea or fix it.
What is a scientist?Using our "observation goggles" we act as if a scientist would when posing questions, making a hypothesis, observing, and making a conclusion. Have you ever looked closely into sunflower and counted the seeds it grows? Do you think an egg floats or sinks in water when salt is added?
Plant & Animal Changes to the EnvironmentDental Unit VideosWe learned about the importance of taking care of our teeth and made videos to show what we learned using the app Draw & Tell.
